Time Never Held Us (I, II), 2021 35.5"x 23.5" Speedball ink (silver and black), Stonehenge paper Printed in collaboration with Arm and Roller Press, Honolulu, HI. Juliette Puplava offers the viewer an optical engagement with her paired portraits composed of dark-gray metallic dots. Upon close examination, the chaotic texture and newsprint pointillism of the images challenge the viewer. But stepping back from the work, human forms start to emerge. Often perspective is gained when one creates distance from a disorienting object or image. The viewer’s visual experience becomes a metaphor for how many of us achieved clarity in the time of quarantine as it forced us to look at the world from a new vantage point.
